80 people : 1 room

3rd June 2016

I think the reason day 1 is so bloody hard is to ensure you remain grateful when sharing a room with 79 others...with all the noises people generate.

We set off bright eyed from SJPDP past the spice shop, in matching tops (by chance not choice) and into a challenging but rewarding day peaking at 1,450m, and tackling 27kms with our packs. After collapsing for the evening in Roncesvalles in an old monastery which sleeps 183 over 3 floors I woke at 5.30 to pilgrims rising to walk on into the fog.

Surprisingly my yoga stretches must've worked as I was able to move. So we started out with a leisurely breakfast for an hour.. A pilgrims breakfast is a piece of toast with juice and tea or coffee. No gluten free or green smoothies in sight. Today was mainly off-road in woods very easy tracks and really enjoyable.

We pushed on 25ks in total to finish at a town of 200 called Larrosoana. After eating olives at the local supermarket/bar and being offered a glass of wine at the check out, by a very friendly and possibly drunk owner - it's been a pilgrims dinner with our Camino family (soup/salad/meat/dessert) and bed!

Pamplona tomorrow.... Sans Bulls.
